Pot Mining – In-situ recovery of Pot Shells Hillside Aluminium, Mozambique and Middle-East

Aluref was involved in the recovery of aluminium reduction pot shells in situ within the pot lines, where pots had been stopped prematurely due to electrical or operational issues.

The recovery process was undertaken with the objective of restoring the pot to a suitable condition for restarting and returning it to aluminium production, thereby extending the useful operating life of the existing pot shell.

The work involved the controlled manual removal of accumulated bath material, dropped anodes and residual aluminium from the pot. This required careful removal of the solidified materials while protecting the existing cathode and pot shell components.

Following the removal and cleaning activities, the cathode surface was shotblasted to remove remaining contamination and provide a clean, prepared surface suitable for inspection and further preparation.

The completed recovery process resulted in a clean and prepared pot shell, allowing the pot to be returned to service and continue producing aluminium rather than being prematurely taken out of operation.

Key Benefits

  • Recovery of prematurely stopped pot shells
  • In-situ work within operating pot lines
  • Manual removal of bath, aluminium and dropped anodes
  • Cathode surface preparation and shotblasting
  • Extension of existing pot shell service life
  • Reduction in the need for premature pot replacement
  • Recovery of productive aluminium production capacity
  • Safe and controlled execution of specialised pot recovery work

Aluref’s pot recovery capability provides aluminium smelters with a practical solution to recover pot life and maximising the value of existing pot shell assets.
