Aluminium Cutting Process – De-lining (Hillside Aluminium) Relining / De-lining Refractory Maintenance Contract
As part of its refractory maintenance projects at aluminium smelters, Aluref developed a purpose-designed hydraulic aluminium cutter that can be mounted to an excavator. The cutter is used to safely cut aluminium deposits from spent pot shells following the removal of the spent pot lining.
Previously, oxygen lancing was commonly used to cut and separate the aluminium. This process presented significant health and safety risks, including exposure to smoke and fumes, open flames, high temperatures and the potential for serious burns to personnel.
To address these risks, Aluref designed and implemented a mechanised hydraulic cutting solution that significantly reduces personnel exposure to the hazards associated with oxygen lancing. The excavator-mounted cutter allows the operator to perform the cutting operation remotely from a safer position while improving control of the process.
Key Benefits:
- Eliminates the need for oxygen lancing during the aluminium cutting process
- Significantly reduces personnel exposure to heat, flames, smoke and fumes
- Reduces the risk of burns and other lancing-related injuries
- Mechanises a previously labour-intensive and hazardous process
- Provides improved control and consistency during aluminium cutting
- Supports safer and more efficient refractory maintenance operations
- Demonstrates Aluref’s commitment to engineering practical solutions to improve safety and productivity
